DURHAM Cathedral is looking to appoint a new Master of the Choristers and organist to succeed Canon Dr James Lancelot.

The highly respected musician has announced his retirement this August after 32 years of leading the cathedral choir.

His replacement must have a clear understanding of the place of music in worship and an outstanding record as a performer.

They will have demonstrable musical and personal skills as an organist and be able to lead, inspire and train others.

Canon David Kennedy, Vice Dean and Precentor at Durham Cathedral, said: “Music has been central to the life of Durham Cathedral since its foundation in the 11th century. “The successful candidate will be part of this centuries-old musical tradition, and we anticipate a very strong field of candidates.”

The main duties and responsibilities for this role include advising on all aspects of the cathedral’s musical activities, managing the staff of the music department, ensuring their appropriate appraisal and professional development and leading the training and direction of the boy and girl choristers, choral scholars and lay clerks of the cathedral choir.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the mission and ministry of Durham Cathedral by maintaining and developing standards of musical excellence in worship, and leading the music department from September.
