ADRENALINE enthusiasts took to the ramps of a new state-of-the-art skate park at its official opening in a County Durham town.

The skate park in Jubilee Park, Spennymoor, was unveiled yesterday with a team of scooter riders on hand to show off their skills.

Built in response to popular demand, the brand new facility will offer skating-lovers the chance to test their abilities on their own doorstep.

Spennymoor Town Mayor, Cllr Derek Taylor, who marked the opening, said: “We hear so often that young people have nothing to do and that is not strictly true. There are lots of things and this is in addition. It is free to use and as long as it’s used properly it will be fantastic.”

Override Skate Park team, based in the North-East, entertained more than 100 people who turned out.

Leanne Davies, of Spennymoor, was one of dozens of parents at the opening whose children Callum Laver, 12, and Reece Laver, seven, took to the park on their scooters.

She said: “My oldest is a very keen skater so we’ve had to take him to Chilton, Bishop Auckland and Coxhoe. They (scooters) cost a lot of money and it’s also good exercise for them.”

The skate park is the latest facility in the park which already has two play areas for children, two football pitches, bowling, tennis and crazy golf.

Standing beside it is a double-sided wall of graffiti designed and completed by Spennymoor’s Mickey Davies and fellow artists Phil Perkins and Matt Wills.
