A SON is fundraising for the hospice which helped care for his father during his dying days.

Craig Day, 29, has teamed up with his brother-in-law Chris Hird, 33, both from Darlington, to train for the Great North Run later this year.

They will be fundraising for St Teresa’s Hospice, a cause close to their hearts.

The hospice, on Woodland Road, Darlington, cared for Mr Day’s father Stephen as he battled with cancer. Sadly he lost his fight in September 2007.

Mr Day said: “The care and support that St Teresa’s Hospice offered to myself and my family at our saddest time will always be remembered, and is why I wanted to say thank you, as well as being able to give something back.”

The pair aim to raise more than £500, and so far have reached the £300 mark.

The late Mr Day worked at Darlington College from 1999 until he became seriously ill, with some of his happiest times working alongside his son there.

His family said he made many friends during his working life at the college, and is still missed by family and friends.

Mr Day and Mr Hird started training for the 13.1 mile run a week after Christmas, and said training was progressing well.

Mr Day said his father’s memory was driving him on with his training, and he wanted to make his father proud when he runs through Newcastle on September 10.

St Teresa’s Hospice provides end of life services, carers’ support, counselling, and bereavement support.
