THE leaders of Durham Constabulary have travelled to London to raise concerns about future funding for the force with the Government’s Policing Minister.

Ron Hogg, Durham Constabulary’s Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner (PCVC), and Chief Constable Mike Barton, raised several issues when they met with Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis.

At the top of their list was a call to minimise any reduction in funding as it would have a detrimental impact on the effectiveness of the force, which has been rated ‘outstanding’ at tackling crime and being efficient by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Mr Hogg said: “It is extremely important that the funding from Government is set according to a formula which enables Durham Constabulary to operate effectively. I am writing to all local MPs to make them aware of the issues which I raised with the Minister, and to enable them to make the case for fair funding locally and in Parliament.”

The pair spoke to Mr Lewis about four particular areas of concern in the government’s review of the police funding formula – council tax precepts; deprivation and alcohol; demand; and cuts to other services.

They are urging the Government to take into consideration cuts to local authority and health budgets which will have an impact on the workload of the force.

Another concern is the impact deprivation in the force area has on resources, which isn’t factored into the proposed funding.

Mr Barton added: “We’re proud that we are able to provide a police service for the people of County Durham and Darlington which is second to none and it’s vital that we do everything we can to maintain that. As the country’s top performing force, which has also been credited with using its money wisely, we are in an enviable position.

“It is therefore key that we take our chance to ensure that those with the purse strings produce a funding formula which is fair and enables us to continue to provide the best possible service for those who live and work in our communities.”
