A COUPLE from the North-East are preparing for a major challenge to raise money for a life-saving charity.

Mike and Rachel Richardson will be taking on the Great North Swim Run at Lake Windermere in June.

It is to raise money for Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team and includes an eleven mile run and a two mile open water swim.

Mrs Richardson, 40, from Durham, said: “I’ve never swum in open water and truth be told it is one of my biggest fears. Luckily, I’ve managed to rope in the hubby to compete with me.”

Mrs Richardson’s late father, who died in 2014 from mesothelioma, helped found the rescue team in 1968 and the base at Sniperley Fire Station is named after him.

The challenge, thought to be the first of its kind in the area, is being undertaken in Mr Scott’s memory.

Mrs Richardson, a mother-of-one, said: “My dad dedicated his life to the team and it meant the world to him.

“He loved the outdoors and was a hill walker through and through.

“Right to the end of his life he maintained his commitment to the mountain rescue team, when he was unable to take part in active duties he became their treasurer and vice-chairman and my mum is still involved with the team today.

“I have done some interesting challenges in the last few years but this is a huge step up.”

The event involves five swim-run transitions without kit change, with participants swimming in trainers and running in wetsuits.

Mr Richardson, 50, said: “I’ve been involved in outdoor activities all of my adult life and although I’ve personally never needed the mountain rescue teams, just knowing they are there provides a sense of security.

“In my professional life I have seen these amazing men and women turn out in all weathers to assist the police look for vulnerable people, their involvement is invaluable.

“This is a charity my father-in-law dedicated his life to and he was a man I greatly admired.

“I made a commitment to do a selfless act at his funeral and this happens to be it.

“At the ripe old age of 50 and numerous injuries to contend with, this will be one helluva challenge.

“If all my friends, colleagues and acquaintances donate just a small amount I’m confident that the funds raised can make a very real and significant difference to a charity that is often overlooked and taken for granted.”
