AN investigation is underway following a spate of sheep worrying incidents in the Durham Dales.

One attack, in Bollihope, near Frosterley, saw a fully grown Ewe brought to the ground with a broken neck leading police to believe a large dog was responsible.

It is one of a number of incidents known to have occurred in the area last month, and Durham Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the attacks or has any other information to get in touch.

PC Geoff Moore, of Stanhope Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “Often with sheep worrying the dogs bite the sheep’s legs and body but this sheep either had its neck broken or its wind pipe crushed. The farmer showed me the puncture marks in its neck. It was a fully grown sheep, which suggests a large dog was responsible.”

The sheep was discovered on Friday, November 25, but it is possible it was killed days before this.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Moore or PC Billy Crampsie via 101 quoting incident number DHM-27112016-0438. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555-111.
