DURHAM Cathedral choristers got the Christmas period off to a start with an afternoon of carols by candlelight.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the cathedral this month, with more than 100 services held during Advent and over the Christmas period.

Visitors to yesterday's service, which took place during the Durham City Christmas Festival, enjoyed traditional carols and choral music in the magnificent nave of the cathedral.

As part of the festival the cathedral is hosting a local producers’s market in the cloisters as well as carol services on Saturday and Sunday.

Carols for All services are being held at 11am and 2pm on Saturday and at 2pm on Sunday.

A special family service, which follows the annual children’s lantern parade from Durham Market Place, takes place on Sunday at 4.15pm.

Other events over the weekend include a chance to see some of the cathedral’s selection of manuscripts from the 14th century onwards. Sessions take place on Saturday at 3pm, 3.30pm and 4pm. Tickets are available by calling 0191 3343805.

The Christmas festival also features festive markets, family entertainment and performances by choirs and bands across the city centre.
