HEROES listed on a war memorial will be honoured on Friday at the first Remembrance Service held there in more than 20 years.

Last year, concerns were raised that the war memorial cross in South Church near Bishop Auckland was no longer part of the town’s Armistice Day commemorations.

Located in the entrance to St Andrew’s Church, the 12-feet high stone memorial lists the names of more than 300 men from the Bishop Auckland parish who fell in First World War.

The Northern Echo:

HONOURED: The war memorial at St Andrew's Church in South Church

Historically, councillors, Lord Lieutenants, the Durham Light Infantry, and organisations such as the Royal Navy Association and Royal Air Force Association, would march to St Andrew’s Church for a service, laying wreaths at the memorial as they passed.

But, in the 1990s, the town’s main memorial moved from Station Bridge to the Market Place and the service moved to nearby St Anne’s Church. Since then, the South Church memorial has not featured in the commemorations.

Last November, Billy Neilson, retired agent to former Bishop Auckland MP Derek Foster, highlighted how no wreaths had been laid at the memorial on Remembrance Sunday in The Northern Echo.

And a few weeks later, the County Durham branch of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) stepped in to help, placing a special wreath on the memorial.

At 11am on Friday, November 11, representatives from the military charity will once again lay wreaths and conduct a minute’s silence at the site, with Ruth Wright, of Bishop Auckland Pipes and Drums, playing the Piper’s Lament.

Mike Donne, chairman of the SSAFA County Durham branch, said: “This is a major war memorial in Bishop Auckland and it is also the memorial that has the names of the fallen on it. I just felt it couldn’t be neglected."

The memorial has also received a makeover, thanks to Durham County Council, which arranged for the structure to be cleaned and repointed, with the names of the fallen repainted and re-leaded.

William Allison & Sons, the same company that designed and built the memorial in 1920, carried out the work.

Cllr Neil Foster, cabinet member for economic regeneration and culture, said: “We’re proud to play our part in ensuring that the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers of Bishop Auckland are not forgotten.”

Mr Neilson has welcomed the news and plans to attend the service.

“My own grandfather served in the Scots Guards and his name is listed on the memorial,” he said. “It was such a great shame it became the forgotten memorial, and I am delighted it will be a part of this year’s commemorations.”
