ONE of the region's most successful bands will be releasing a new album and seven inch vinyl single in the new year as a result of a new publishing deal, it has been announced.

Darlington band Weekend Sun, who headlined a stage at the Camp Bestival festival last year, have recently been championed by Viz creator Chris Donald and have been played by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 6 as well as getting airplay on Japanese and Australian radio.

The funk, soul and disco band have been singed by Wipeout Ltd, which means the group's music will be played on restaurants, cruise ships and hotel lobbies across the world.

Song writer Phil Smith, who is also an English teacher at St Francis Xavier School in Richmond, said this had been a breakthrough year.

He said: "We've been really encouraged by radio play response to our recent album teaser preview video filmed the Old Majestic in Darlington. We're so pleased with the album and the reaction we're getting, it's really encouraging."

The album which has not yet been titled, will be the band's second and the vinyl single Weekend Sun's third. Other members of the band are Chris Tarn, Rob Morris, Chris Davison, Beth Miller, Esther Taylor, Steve Blakeburn.
