A PEDESTRIAN who died after he was hit by a car on Newton Cap Viaduct, near Bishop Auckland, has been identified by police.

Trevor McGhee, 51, from the Crook area, is believed to have been struck by a car as he walked along the carriageway during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police were called to the scene just before 5am following reports of an injured man in the road.

Mr McGhee was taken by ambulance to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where he sadly died from his injuries. The driver of the car was uninjured.

The A689 was closed in both directions for several hours between Addison Road and the B6284 High Bondgate to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident.

It re-opened just before 9.30am.
