FORCES veterans, civic dignitaries and college students all came together to enjoy a fundraising coffee morning in Darlington.

The event, at the 50 Signals Squadron base on Neasham Road, was organised to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and was attended by Darlington’s Mayor and Mayoress Brian and Doris Jones.

They were joined by veterans from Age UK Darlington’s group and from the Royal Signals Association, as well as students from the public services course at Darlington College.

Representatives from the Royal British Legion, SSAFA Military Charity and Darlington Council also joined in the fun.

Captain David Straw said the event had been a huge success and raised £409 for Macmillan, with more likely to come.

He said: “We are always looking to bring together the community and with Darlington Borough Council having signed the Armed Forces Covenant they invest in veterans and so do we.

“So it brought like-minded people together.”

All except one of the cakes that was raffled off were baked by the 50 Signals Squadron soldiers and their families and any that were left over were donated to the Darlington Women’s Refuge.
