A RACE which has been part of a County Durham town’s heritage for more than half a decade returns this month.
The Durham National National Handicap Steeplechase Race will take place at Sedgefield Racecourse on Thursday, October 27.
Having started out in 1955, it is the ground’s biggest race of the year and the racecourse has invested a further £10,000 to the prize fund, meaning the winner will pocket a whopping £30,000.
Jill Williamson, executive director at Sedgefield Racecourse, said: “With horses such as Red Alligator who went onto win at Aintree in 1968 for Denys Smith and Grand National winning trainer Dr Richard Newland, the race is an exciting watch and proves to be extremely popular.”
The Class 2 race which is sponsored by Sean Magee, a horse racing journalist and author of the Arkle, will start at about 3pm and is among a further seven races to take place during the afternoon.
