A SMALL band of charity crusaders who raise funds and awareness for a cause close to their hearts are celebrating after reaching a landmark.

Less than eight years after its launch, Brighter Skies has raised £50,000 for Alzheimers Research UK.

Committee members all got involved in the group, which is based in Spennymoor, County Durham, because they have parents or other loved ones with dementia.

Small fundraising initiatives such as supermarket bag-packs, tombolas and a popular bingo night at Hartley Terrace Community Centre every Thursday have gradually swelled the coffers.

Founder member and treasurer Margaret Gibson said: “I remember seeing someone climb a mountain to raise £30,000 and wondering if we’d get there one day.

“It is brilliant to reach £50,000, it is amazing and we’re really proud.”

Alzheimer’s Research UK powers world class studies into prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia- a range of conditions associated with an ongoing decline of the brain with symptoms such as memory loss, mental confusion and changes in personality and mood.

The charity is currently supporting dementia research projects worth over £33 million in leading universities across the UK and relies on donations to continue its work.

Members of Brighter Skies have met with scientists at the Newcastle Network Centre, based at Newcastle University, to see how their money is being spent.

Christina Newton said: “We’ve been a few times now, met the lead professor, learnt about the scanner and research projects and seen the brain bank.

“All the staff and students there are so very dedicated to what they are doing and making progress.

“To know what is happening with the money is encouragement to keep going.”

Susan Smith added: “The research ongoing is too late for our parents who are already diagnosed, it is probably going to be too late for me and people my age.

“But I do it for my children and children’s children, to know that we are helping work towards preventions, treatments and a cure for future generations.”

The group also raises awareness by talking to potential charity supporters and running information stands and wants to increase understanding in the town.
