TWO spectacular lantern parades will light up the dark skies of North Yorkshire this winter,
The colourful events will take place in Whitby on November 18 and Scarborough on December 2.
And theatre company Animated Objects, which is organising the parades, is inviting people to contribute by making their own lantern.
The first is part of Whitby’s Christmas Festival, organised by the town council.
It will start at the Pannett Art Gallery at 5.15pm, and progress through the town to the Dock End, where it will be followed by live music, the official switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights and a firework display.
A free lantern-making workshop will be held at Whitby Library on October 22 from 10am to noon.
The Scarborough event, Moonlight and Song, will take place in the town’s Peasholm Park from 5.30pm on December 2, and will last about an hour. Local schools, including Northstead and St Peter’s primary schools, and community groups will take part in the parade, with singing led by the Scarborough Community Choir, and seasonal readings.
There will be free lantern-making workshops at Peasholm Park from 2pm to 4pm on October 22 and 10am to noon at Scarborough Library on November 26.
