Nine centuries of history will be brought to life with the introduction of guided tours at St Peter’s Chapel at Auckland Castle.

The castle, which is still used exclusively by the Bishop of Durham, will be opened for weekend visits from Saturday, October 8.

The 45 minute tours, led by volunteers from the Auckland Castle Trust, will explain how the Chapel was converted from the Castle’s original dining hall in the 13th Century and then evolved continuously as the various Prince Bishops of Durham made alterations and improvements across the centuries.

It will also give those in attendance a chance to learn more about the interior of the Grade 1 listed building, including its spectacular stained glass windows, carved oak altarpiece, 17th Century ceiling and historic coats of arms lining the walls.

Michele Armstrong, of Auckland Castle Trust said: “Not only are the architecture and adornments captivating but the history of the site is enthralling too, with few people realising that it was originally a medieval hall where the Prince Bishops held lavish feasts and entertained. These guided tours will give visitors a real insight into the history.”

Tours will run hourly from 10.30am-2.30pm every Saturday and Sunday from 8 October to 18 December and are free. Visit aucklandcastle.org
