JEREMY Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are set to make a meal out of their return to North Yorkshire, to film for their new show The Grand Tour.

The presenters’ two-day visit to Whitby next month will be the first time they have filmed in the county since Clarkson punched Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon at Simonstone Hall Hotel, near Hawes, last year.

Clarkson had apparently upset that he could not order a steak because the kitchen had closed, and started a fracas which led to him being fired from the hit television show.

Producers said the show would be filmed on October 13 and 14 and it is understood the presenters will not be left short of an evening meal of their liking, with fish and chips being laid on.

When Clarkson visited Whitby and the Esk Valley while road testing a BMW i8 last year he said the location had been chosen because “you get the best fish and chips in the world there”. May and Clarkson have previously hailed meals from family-run restaurant Mr Chips, in Church Street.

The Grand Tour, which has been reported to have a £160m budget, will be aired in 12 weekly instalments from Friday, November 18.

The trio will be filming in the town before a a live audience inside a giant tent, having already filmed in South Africa and the US for the show which will broadcast on Amazon Prime. Last week, Clarkson tweeted the opening episodes would include “the most complicated day’s filming we’ve ever attempted”.

Jay Marine, vice president of Amazon Video Europe, said: “We were blown away by the customer demand for tickets to our studio tent recordings in Johannesburg and California and today we are excited to announce that the guys are coming home.

“Our first UK stop on The Grand Tour will be the historic North Yorkshire town of Whitby, so we invite fans to get in early to join Jeremy, Richard and James for thrills, spills and fish and chips by the seaside.”

The former Top Gear team are no strangers to the seaside resort having filmed there in 2012, 2014 and last year and Hammond went to school in the county as his father had a probate business in Ripon.

In 2014, Clarkson was caught speeding while driving away from Whitby following a day’s filming. He admitted he had been driving too fast to be offered a speed awareness course.

Producers said audience participation would be key during the live Whitby recording.

They added: “There are a very limited number of spots available and your application does not guarantee that you will receive tickets.”
