Two brothers jailed for threatening to blind a young mum in her own home have had their sentences slashed by senior judges.

Daniel Calvert, 19, and Sean Oliver, 22, stormed into the victim’s home as she cared for her six-week-old baby.

The siblings were on the hunt for a man in a dispute sparked by a petty debt, London’s Appeal Court heard.

Calvert forced his way into the woman’s home and Oliver stood near her - brandishing a small bottle containing green liquid.

He told her the bottle was filled with toxic ammonia, and threatened: “I’m going to blind you with it.”

Lord Justice Burnett said: “She believed the liquid to be ammonia and was terrified that it would be thrown in her face.”

“She was also terrified for the safety of her baby.”

The ordeal lasted 10 minutes all in all - during which time Calvert also produced a nine-inch long knife.

Both brothers were sentenced at Durham Crown Court in May this year after admitting aggravated burglary.

Oliver, of East View Terrace, Shildon, was jailed for eight years while Calvert, of the same address, was locked up for seven years.

But the pair’s case reached the Appeal Court as their lawyers successfully challenged their punishments.

Lord Justice Burnett, sitting with Mrs Justice Simler and Mr Justice William Davis, said the attack had clearly caused the woman “significant trauma.”

“There was the threat of serious violence and the involvement of weapons,” he added.

But despite the “horror” of the incident no physical injury had been caused, said the judge.

Due to her “psychological robustness”, the long-term mental impact on the victim was also limited, added Lord Justice Burnett.

The original sentences should have taken more account of the pair’s guilty pleas, he ruled.

Oliver’s sentence was cut to seven years, while Calvert’s was reduced down to six years.
