A GROUP of North-East campaigners joined more than 10,000 people in a march through London to show support for refugees.

They included Chris Bird, a CAFOD supporter and volunteer with the Youth Ministry Team, in Consett, County Durham.

The Refugees Welcome March started at London's Park Lane and ended in Parliament Square.

There was also a joint ecumenical service of hope for refugees at St James’s Roman Catholic Church, London, led by CAFOD, the official aid agency of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

Mr Bird said: “There were thousands of people marching, chanting, singing, playing drums and holding placards.

“What surprised me most was the diversity in the crowd, a plethora of people of different backgrounds, age, race, class, faith and no faith.

“Yet, all these people were here for one reason, to be part of a voice standing in solidarity welcoming refugees. It was quite something to behold.”

This month world leaders will meet to discuss refugees and migration at two United Nations summits – including a gathering hosted by US President Barack Obama.
