A BOY who spent a year growing his hair out for charity has just had it cut to make a wig for people with cancer.

Eight-year-old Evan Brown, from Sherburn near Durham City, decided to try and grow his hair for the Little Princess Trust following the death of a family friend from cancer.

And after a year of trying to get his hair long enough to make a wig, he has now had it cut for the charity, while raising more than £1,000.

Hayley Brown, his mother, said: “It was all down to him. He decided he wanted to raise money for people who had cancer and then he found out about the charity and decided to grow his hair as well.

“He got teased a lot, and not just by children, but he just took it on the chin. I said a few times he could get it cut but he was adamant he wanted to get it long enough to make a wig.

“We are so proud of him. The fact that he persevered over the year and raised so much shows how mature he is for an eight-year-old.”

He had nine inches of hair cut off, which will go to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs from real hair to give to children who have lost their own.

It costs between £350 and £500 to make each one and the Sherburn Primary School pupil has been collecting sponsorship to try and raise enough to make a wig as well.

Mrs Brown added: “He set out to raise £75 but when he found out a wig costs about £350 he wanted to raise that. It made him much more determined to ask for sponsorship. Now he’s raised enough for almost three wigs.”
