SKATEBOARDERS, scooter riders and BMX bikers are set to show off their skills as part of an initiative to promote diversity in communities.

The free Sk8 Safe Skate Jam event at the renovated Ripon Skate Park on Saturday, from noon to 3pm, will feature displays by Reece Archibald, of Latetricks Freestyle Demo Team, live music from Lewis Maverick Walwyn, of DJSchoolUK, and competitions, including a best trick contest, with prizes open to all ages and abilities.

The skate park, located behind Ripon Community Centre, on Dallamires Lane, was reopened following efforts by community group Ripon Bike Park Project, Harrogate Borough Council and Ripon City Council.

Sk8 Safe coach Denham Hill said: “The aim is simple, to raise awareness of the skate park, to create a positive and welcoming environment for users old and new, and a platform for local talent.

“These events also help to challenge some of the misconceptions the community may have in terms of youth culture and help to establish a culture of respect among park users."
