A SERIES of drop-in sessions are to be held across North Yorkshire to help businesses improve their fire safety.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be offering firms safety messages to be shared with their staff during the Chief Fire Officers Association’s UK Business Safety Week, from September 5 to 11.

The week has been scheduled to run at a time when many businesses will be recruiting additional members of seasonal staff in the run up to the Christmas period.

And they may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff, and may not be aware of the steps needed to protect themselves, customers and colleagues.

Fire chiefs says it is also an opportunity to remind employers of the need to review risk assessments and training and make sure existing staff know the importance of fire safety.

“Helping businesses manage their fire risks and hazards, and potentially save lives and safeguard their businesses against financial and commercial loss is of key importance, particularly in these competitive times when growth and sustainability are a priority,” said a spokesman.

“Fire can cause major disruption for businesses – there is a far greater chance of recovery if risks have been identified, and appropriate arrangements have been put in place”

Sessions will be held at the Hambleton District Council offices in Northallerton between 10am and noon on September 7; Richmond library between 11am and noon on September 8; and the Green Lane centre in Whitby on September 7 between 9.30am and 5pm.
