RUNNERS braved the elements to take on a challenging trail through beautiful surrounds.

A bumper 256 people pulled on their trainers today (August 27) for the second annual Auckland Castle Trail Race, in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.

Organised by Auckland Castle with Shildon Running Club and Durham County Council Parklife, the event saw participants embark on a five-mile race, with a further 60 runners entered into a junior route.

Ed Murphy, of Shildon Running Club, said: “It was really well supported and all the feedback we’ve had back has been brilliant. It’s a tough run - it’s hilly, very demanding and with the weather it was boggy.”

Mike Jefferies, of Richmond Harriers, and Lorna Graham, of Birtley AC, won the senior race while Adam Ord, of Durham Harriers, and Tess Graham were the first juniors.
