THE sad sight of old televisions and computers lining the skips at local tips has sparked cries for a repair revolution.

Adrian Bulmer is determined to save landfill sites from being filled with unwanted electrical goods by setting up a Restart Party in his hometown of Darlington.

The 24-year-old senior IT technician says it frustrates him when he sees unwanted toasters and televisions discarded at the tip when some of them could be repaired and used again.

He is so passionate about it that he has set the wheels in motion for an event at the end of September where he and fellow volunteers will repair old electrical items for free so that they can be put to good use.

He said: “I am sure that a lot of these things that are taken to the tip have simple things wrong with them, like a blown fuse, but people don’t either have the knowledge or the means of repairing them so it is easier to get rid of them.”

He launched Restarters Darlington earlier this month and has been delighted with the support he has had so far.

He said: “We have a venue and we have a date but we need to have public liability insurance before we can go ahead.’’

He explained that the event would be free and run by volunteers but it was difficult to get quotes for the insurance because they are not a registered charity.

Mr Balmer said he was hoping a charity, perhaps with an environmental ethos, would act as an umbrella for the event.

He said: “It is complicated but we have been advised if we can get a charity to support us, we could use their public liability insurance.’’

He is also appealing for more volunteers to come forward to help with the event.

He said: “We do have some volunteers already but it would be nice to have more. We need people who could either take part in repairing electronics and fixing things or anyone who just generally wants to help.

“I really want to make this work because it is something that is worthwhile. It would be fantastic if someone could help us with this final hurdle. If we can get it going we want to make it a regular event.”
