COUNTY Durham's Olympian schoolgirl Amy Tinkler, is over the moon after getting her GCSE results.

The 16-year-old gymnast, who returned from Rio with a bronze medal earlier this week, has added her exam results to her list of things to celebrate.

Amy, from Bishop Auckland, decided not to join her classmates at Durham High School for Girls but had her results emailed to her.

She said: "I am absolutely over the moon with the four GCSEs results I received today. Along with the one I took last year, I have now passed five GCSEs alongside training, Olympic trials and competitions which have given me just five full weeks in school throughout Year 11. I could not be happier and am very grateful to the staff at Durham High School for Girls for all their support."

Amy, who was Team GB's youngest member, is splitting her GCSEs over three years to combine her studies with her training regime, which can be up to 31 hours a week.

Headteacher Lynne Renwick said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming her back and celebrating with her. Now that Rio is out of the way we’re hoping to see a bit more of her. Since Christmas her training schedule has been really intense. We’re so proud.”

Her PE teacher Lyndsay Lowes is looking forward to Amy returning to school to do an A-level in the subject.

She said: “I can’t put it into words how well she has done. To be able to juggle GCSEs and go out to Rio as the youngest member of the team and come back with a medal is amazing. I was screaming at the TV when she was on and I was in floods of tears. She’s done herself proud.”

Amy added: "I am now looking forward to returning to Durham High School in September to study my A-Levels at the same time as I take my remaining GCSEs and prepare for the following few years of competitions, including the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018."
