A HAND-CARVED cross made from the wreckage of capsized refugee boats is going on display in a North East cathedral next week.
Made by an Italian carpenter, the cross will be presented to Canon Gerard Robinson in St Mary’s Cathedral, Middlesbrough after the 6.30pm mass on Thursday, September 1.
People from refugee and Christian organisations including Caritas will be in attendance to show solidarity with refugees.
The Lampedusa cross will then be displayed in the cathedral, on Dalby Way, Coulby Newham, for three weeks.
Carol Cross, aid agency CAFOD’s representative in the Middlesbrough Diocese, said: “The mass at St. Mary’s will give the people an opportunity to pray for those who are affected by the refugee crisis and to remember those who have lost their lives as a consequence. We hope that by walking this pilgrimage in the cathedral, we can walk in solidarity alongside people who are suffering.”
