KIND-HEARTED neighbours have raised hundreds of pounds for charity after opening up their gardens to the public.

Mary Smith and Eric and Delia Ayres, kindly opened their Hillside Cottage gardens in Low Etherley, on Saturday, August 13.

The event allowed visitors to experience both gardens as well as indulge in home-made cakes as well as trying their luck at the tombola and raffles.

The event raised £625 which will go towards providing end of life care by Marie Curie Nurses, in the Bishop Auckland area.

Both gardens will also be open for autumn colour on Sunday, October 9, as part of The National Garden Scheme in support of both Marie Curie and Macmillan

Cancer Support.

Mr Ayres garden concentrates on several specimens of trees and shrubs while Mrs Smith’s is based on island beds and a cottage garden feel and she also grows her own fruit and vegetables and has her own beehives.
