A SOCIAL media fund has been launched to save a day centre for elderly and vulnerable people.

The charity-run Dales Care centre in Bedale is closing tomorrow because it is running out of money.

Trustees say they are determined it will be a temporary closure while they look for alternative funding and try to raise cash for the centre, which enabling the older and more vulnerable members of the community to meet and eat meals together.

A justgiving fund has been set up by a concerned resident and has already raised more than £1,300, with £1,000 being donated by one anonymous donor.

Trustee Phil Braithwaite said:”This is so important for us, the more money we can raise the sooner we can reopen. The problem is we are not meeting our budgets, we do not now get any local authority funding, so along with many charities we are struggling.

“We did not want to carry on and run out of money, which could have meant the centre would be closed for good and the building would have to be sold off.

“We are determined to reopen before Christmas but we need to re-organise.

“In this area there is a real need for this service, people come here every day for a proper lunch, for companionship and support, and so many people rely on the centre.”

Dales Care was opened more than 25 years ago, but has struggled since £23,000 in funds from the local authority were cut after the withdrawal of services for Alzheimer sufferers.
