FAMILIES had the chance to have a closer look at fire fighters and police officers during a fun day highlighting the work of the uniformed services.

The day was held in Durham City centre on Sunday and featured Durham Police, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue, the RLNI, St John's Ambulance and mountain rescue.

People had the opportunity to watch live water rescues on the River Wear, experience a house fire in an inflatable simulator and have a closer look at emergency vehicles.

Fans of the Channel 5 show Police Interceptors, which features officers from Durham and Cleveland’s Special Operations Unit, were also able to meet some of those involved in the show.

Those with a head for heights had the chance of having a go in one of the fire service’s aerial platforms, giving them a bird’s eye view of the city centre.

Other entertainment included an army missile launcher in Market Place, service vehicles and police dogs.

The day was also raising awareness about suicide prevention charity If U Care Share Foundation.

David Brown, from the foundation, said: “We know that unfortunately our uniformed services are affected by suicide more often than the general public, this is because they are often the first to respond but also because they are more at risk themselves.

"Together we are stronger and If U Care Share Foundation are delighted to support this event and raise much needed awareness.”
