POOCHES from across the region took the lead at an annual County Durham dog show on Sunday.

Everything from sausage dogs to German shepherds descended on Hardwick Park, near Sedgefield, for the sixth annual Darlington Retired Greyhound Trust’s dog show.

More than 100 of man’s four-legged friends entered the 16 classes including waggiest tail, best child handler and fancy dress to lend their support to the charity, which aims to give retired greyhounds their forever home.

Rain clouds held off for the event which saw families enjoy the fun-packed day with everything from a merry-go-round, tombola and cake stalls to entertain them.

The event was launched six years ago by Janet and Doug Brass and their daughter Claire Brass.

Ms Brass, 30, said dog owners had come far and wide for the competition which she dubbed a “mini Crufts”.

“The turn-out exceeds our expectations and it’s just a very family-orientated event that’s fun and it raises awareness of the greyhounds which is the main concern,” she said.

“All money goes to the trust which looks after the greyhounds until they are re-homed which is really important because greyhounds are still quite misunderstood and it’s getting better but there’s still lots in kennels looking for their forever home.”

She added: “It’s turned into a mini Crufts – some dogs are returning to defend their titles from last year.”
