A RECORD amount of food has been donated by church goers this year.

More than 331 kilograms of food was donated by people visiting Durham Cathedral in the last 12 months - enough to provide 414 meals for people in crisis.

The food is given by the cathedral to the County Durham Foodbank, an initiative of the Durham Christian Partnership.

Canon Rosalind Brown from Durham Cathedral, said: “We are immensely grateful to everyone who has donated to our foodbank collection so far, to provide much needed support to local families in need.

“Food is a something so many of us take for granted but in times of crisis it can become a luxury many simply cannot afford. By donating even just one item, you will be helping a local person or family to put a meal on their table, but more than that, you will be showing them that someone in their community cares enough to help them in their hour of need.”

The drop-off point for donations has now moved to the south transept, next to the Vergers Vestry. Donations can also be left with a Verger if members of the public cannot locate the box.

Non-perishable food donations are welcome.
