DARLINGTON dignitaries opened a new shop in Darlington at the weekend.

The town’s mayor and mayoress, Brian and Doris Jones, joined their deputy Jan Taylor to enjoy a family fun day at Poundstretcher, on Whessoe Road.

On Saturday, August 13 the trio helped to launch the shop, with Cllr Taylor cutting the ribbon to formerly open the former B&Q premises in its new guise.

The mayor, Cllr Jones, told those present he was delighted to open the store, welcomed the chain’s investment in the town and wished its staff success for the future.

The new Poundstretcher brings 23 new jobs to Darlington, all of which have been filled by local workers.

To mark the shop’s opening, the team staged a variety of games and activities while giving shoppers the opportunity to win vouchers and some of their best-selling items.

Poundstretcher area manager John Graham said: “It was a very good day, with a great atmosphere.

“We gave away a lot of prizes and look forward to offering our new customers ni Darlington exceptional service and great prices.”

The shop offers a variety of household essentials along with pet supplies.
