A POPULAR seaside pub has been shortlisted for as a national finalist in the Great British Pub Awards.

The Alexandra Vaults, run by Joanne Phelps, has been recognised as one of only six finalists in the Best Community Pub category.

The pub, which celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, is firmly established with locals who enjoy the traditional setting and friendly environment.

Ms Phelps, who has been in charge of the pub for more than 15 years, said: “For me, my customers are my extended family and my aim is for everyone to feel like they are coming home when they come into my pub.

“The pub represents a fantastic way to bring the local community together, whether that is supporting one of our chosen charities such as the Teesside Hospice, Marie Curie and Saltburn Animal Rescue Association, or hosting a complimentary Christmas Day lunch to ensure that no one has to eat alone.

“The fact that our efforts have been recognised at the highest level makes me feel very proud. It just goes to show that the merits of a traditional community pub which focuses on service and standards are still held in high regard – I can’t wait to tell all of my regulars that we have been shortlisted as one of the top community pubs in the country.”

She has recently invested more than £10,000 renovating the interior of the pub and creating a new beer garden including a pagoda for customers to enjoy in the summer months.

Jason Moran, the development manager of the pub’s owner Punch Taverns, said: “The team has work tirelessly to deliver a fantastic service for their customers day-in day-out. Over the last 15 years they have prospered by staying true to their traditional pub roots – everyone you speak to describes Joanne as the ‘friendly landlady’ who always has time to talk, who makes you feel important and valued and who has dedicated her life to the pub.”

More than 1,300 pubs entered the Great British Pub Awards 2016 across 16 categories.

The overall category winners will be revealed at the Best of British-themed ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane, London, on Wednesday, October 5.
