MOTORISTS coming into Darlington can expect more delays when temporary traffic lights are set up on North Road.

This will come just one week after roadworks at Brinkburn Road, in the town, come to an end.

Road users will have a week’s resbite from delays before the essential maintenance works begin on the A167 North Road and Burtree Lane.

Burtree Lane will be closed and two-way traffic lights will be placed on North Road for the work which could take three weeks to complete.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Local Environment and Transport said: “Managing roadworks is always difficult, as closing a road necessarily causes disruption to people’s journeys.

“While we try and minimise this disruption as much as possible, for example by planning maintenance work in the school holidays when traffic volumes are lower, we acknowledge that it can be an inconvenience to people. “

Coun Wallis said reconstruction work is necessary due to a problem with water under the road causing damage to the lower layers of construction. If left, the water may lead to the road construction failing or a void being created which would result in longer term and more expensive works.

He said: “I’d like to thank road users for their patience during recent works, and apologise for any further disruption these works will cause.”

The works are scheduled for up to three weeks from Monday August 8 and advanced signs are being placed prior to the works to warn drivers so they may plan alternative routes.
