FIRE crews cut a woman free from her car this morning after a crash in Ferryhill.

A Citroen C3 driven by the woman, who is believed to be in her early 30s, collided with an embankment on Mainsforth Road near the town's cricket club.

Fire crews from Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe and the Special Rescue Unit from Bishop Auckland were alerted to the incident at 8.30am and joined paramedics who were already at the scene.

Twelve firefighters used specialist equipment to cut the roof of the car free so the driver could be removed safely after complaining of neck injuries.

The road was closed for some time but has since reopened.
