MORE than 10,000 people visited a North-East museum over the weekend to see the Flying Scotsman.

The iconic steam locomotive is spending eight days at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum, in Shildon, County Durham, as part of the establishment's 1960s-themed Shildon Shed Bash.

Sharing the platform with the Flying Scotsman are locomotives Union of South Africa and Green Arrow.

Fans travelled from across the country to attend the event, which opened on Saturday.

Gary Campbell, museum manager at Locomotion, said: “It’s great to see so many people young and old joining us to marvel at the sight of Scotsman in full steam, riding behind it in the morning and boarding its cab in the afternoon.

"Our free showcase of Scotsman alongside other East Coast giants is the perfect end to Scotsman Season, our museum’s series of events celebrating this national treasure’s 2016 return to the tracks.”

Visitors can ride behind Flying Scotsman, for £5, between 10am and 1pm, and can access the locomotive's cab in the afternoons.

The event runs daily, from 9.30am to 6pm, until Sunday, July 31.

There is no free visitor parking at the museum for the duration of the Shildon Shed Bash.

Park and ride services are operating from Hardwick Park, in Sedgefield, and Bishop Auckland College, for £3 per person.
