POLICE have named a teenager killed in an early morning crash as 17-year-old James Docherty.

The teenager died after a BMW3 series car overturned and crashed on the roundabout at the end of Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead at 4am on Sunday morning.

Two other men were taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

It is reported that five people were in the car at the time of the crash and that two had fled the scene.

Police investigating the fatal crash say they have now arrested four men in connection with the incident.

Sergeant Steve Armstrong, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is a tragic incident and we are still trying to establish the exact circumstances as to what happened yesterday morning.

"Specialist officers are working closely with his family at this difficult time and we ask that people respect their privacy as our enquiries continue."
