A BUSINESS set up by a former RAF serviceman and fire-fighter is celebrating reporting strong recent performance and winning major national contracts.

MacDonald Martin Ltd has been named at the top of an industry excellence list, while picking up new work that is worth almost £200,000 to the Sunderland-based business.

Founded by Andy Trafford, MacDonald Martin has been listed as the number one provider of fire alarm and emergency lighting installation and maintenance on the Safety and Security Framework, which was set up in 2013 by National Housing Consortium, beating a number of competitors including established industry names.

The business is now looking to dominate in other areas of the framework as it moves into more sophisticated security services, including installing and maintaining intruder alarms, CCTV and door access systems.

Mr Trafford said: “This is a really exciting time for everyone at MacDonald Martin as we secure new work, expand our team of specialists and grow our operation across the country.

“It has been a fantastic year for the business so far, and to be recognised as an industry leader through this framework is testament to all of the team’s hard work, skill and determination to see a job through to completion.”

The business specialises in all aspects of fire and electrical safety and security systems, as well as creating, developing and supplying safety solutions tailored to the individual workplace.

The new contracts will see the firm working with Circle Housing, providing services to 1,050 properties across London and Birmingham, and with York City Council, completing fire risk assessments and safety and security installations in 180 blocks of flats, five hostels, and 12 sheltered accommodation buildings.

Mr Trafford added: “We’re delighted with how well business is going this year, we’ve taken on four new apprentices to bolster our team and we’re ready for even more as we’re working to make the second half of this year just as successful.”
