EMERGENCY services rescued a man trapped inside his car after crashing into a tree.
Specialist rescue units were called to attend the serious accident on the A68, near Darlington, at around 7.20am on Friday.

Fire and Rescue Service crews from Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe managed to free the driver from his Peugeot 307 before he was taken to hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “The accident involved a Peugeot 307 motor car which has failed to negotiate a left hand bend. As a result the vehicle has rolled and collided with a tree. 

“The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, a 25-year-old local man area was taken from the scene by Air Ambulance to James Cook Hospital with extensive injuries, consisting of a broken femur and pelvis.” 

The route at Houghton Bank, near Heighington, Darlington, was closed in both directions before the accident was cleared at around 10.30am.
