YVETTE Cooper joined some of the region’s female MPs in Darlington today to urge women to join the Remain campaign.

The Labour MP and former Shadow Home Secretary called on the women of the North-East to use their vote to stay in the EU.

She held a lunch with Remain supporters and MPs Jenny Chapman, Roberta Blackman-Woods and Helen Goodman at Darlington’s Dolphin Centre before taking to the streets to campaign.

Ms Cooper believes leaving the EU could result in a deterioration of hard-won women’s rights, highlighting possible job losses, conditions around maternity pay and regulations protecting low-paid workers.

She appealed to undecided mothers to look to their children for advice, saying a vote to remain was essential to protect future generations.

Ms Cooper said: “There will be consequences for families across the North-East if we lose investment and end up with a Tory Brexit Britain.

“To women in the North-East, I’d say this is about your kids’ future and all of our kids’ futures.

“This will affect them for decades to come and we are stronger if we work together than if we are left to sink or swim alone.”

Ms Cooper’s visit was organised by Britain Stronger in Europe, who halted campaigning following the shooting of MP Jo Cox.
