THE biggest Scout group in the county is launching an urgent appeal for more volunteers to help with its booming membership.

The latest Scout census revealed the Durham City District branch has more beavers, scouts and explorers than any other group and only missed out on having the biggest cubs group by a single child.

The groups in Gilesgate, Elvet, Neville’s Cross, Framwellgate Moor, Belmont, Coxhoe, Brandon and Waterhouses have some of the biggest waiting lists in the county, particularly among the younger sections, and the groups need more volunteers to cope with the growing membership.

District Commissioner John Little said: “Our area has grown rapidly across all sections which is fantastic news and a clear testament to the hard work of all those involved in the District.

“However, success has also led to a large waiting list to join which is why we are so desperate for more volunteers to help out during the week.

“We would be extremely grateful if anyone is interested in helping and urge them to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Adult volunteers need to be 18 and over and there is no upper age limit, while young people aged 14 to18 can consider joining as young leaders. People can commit as much time as they want to and will be properly trained and supported.
