MY VIEWS on the EU are no secret, and as we edge closer to the Referendum, we’re starting to see both sides of the debate become more vocal, writes Mike Matthews, Nifco UK managing director and European operations officer.

The Brexit supporters had, for a long time, stayed rather quiet, but are now making their voice heard, which is great to see. Though I feel very strongly that Britain is better in Europe, I do think it is critical that the general public are given the right information to allow them to make an informed decision, come June 23.

To most people – leading busy lives – their focus is much closer to home, so the ins and outs of whether or not the country is stronger in Europe is low down on the priority list. However, the decision on EU membership is one that will impact on everyone’s lives – whether we chose to stay in membership or to leave.

As an employer, with the ability to inform more than 500 people about the facts of EU membership, we have been telling people the facts – from both sides of the debate. While I have my own view, it is important that everybody has the right to take a side, based on their own beliefs and circumstances, and I feel very strongly that employers have a part to play in activating their teams and sharing information that will allow them to make an informed decision.

With days to go now, until the nation makes its decision on whether its place is in or out of Europe, I would urge employers need to do their bit – in a balanced and unbiased way – to share the facts to their teams and to help them make their decision. This is a decision that must be made with as many of the facts understood as possible. It is not about influencing, or presenting propaganda, but about ensuring that – come decision day on Europe – the nation makes up its mind based on the views of many and not of few.
