CHILDREN enjoyed storytelling with a twist today (May 31) after a restaurant owner teamed up with a community arts centre to share some traditional Indian tales.

Zak Ahmed, of Spice Island, in Barnard Castle, donned traditional Indian dress as he hosted the event at The Witham as part of their half-term activities.

The event was inspired by the centre’s Dancing the Road event on May 27, which saw North-East Dance Company, FERTILE GROUND bring ‘Elephant Dances’ to the town, inspired by the ‘Celebrating Ganesha’ exhibition at The Bowes Museum.

Twelve children enjoyed Mr Ahmed’s stories which included moral tales about Ganesha himself as well as a funny tale about a monkey and crocodile.

A treasure hunt for mini Ganesha statues was also held in the centre’s cafe while the children enjoyed the activity so much they asked Mr Ahmed to read some more.

Speaking about the experience, Mr Ahmed said: “It was good fun and it’s just a simple way to introduce our culture to children to show there are other ways of life as well as what we know in this country.

“We went through quite a few different ones but they all had a moral.”

Dr Seuss classic Horton Hears a Who! (U) will also be shown on Thursday, June 2, from 1.30pm, with Spice Island providing free Indian treats with every child’s ticket.
