MORE than 500 would-be footballers and their supporters raised more than £10,000 at a charity event at Middlesbrough FC’s Riverside on Sunday.
Four teams, each sponsored by a Teesside business, showed up to raise money for James Cook University Hospital’s Renal Unit and Islamic Relief which is helping displaced people in Syria.
The winning team wore their beloved Boro shirts and were presented with a trophy at the stadium
One of the organisers, Qasim Asghar, explained that the South Tees Renal Unit had helped look after his late father.
He said: “They gave him the support that prolonged his life and gave us the opportunity to share so many precious moments. It is impossible to express the gratitude we all feel, but I hope the money raised can go some way towards expressing how much the unit means to the people of Middlesbrough.”
Half the money will go to Islamic Relief who is one of the few international relief organisations still operating inside Syria where 6.5 million have been forced out of their homes but are still in the country. Sponsors included: Middlesbrough FC, Miraaj Restaurant and De Melo Café.
