Revolutionist held off Central Square to provide Middleham trainer Mark Johnston with back-to-back wins in the Racing UK Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar.

The giant four-year-old was a winner at Newmarket a week and a half ago but a 4lb rise was not enough to stop the 8-1 scorer.

Revolutionist's jockey Joe Fanning sat in second early on before Eternal dropped away and he fended off all-comers in the straight.

Central Square, the 9-4 favourite, finished second, but he was a length and a quarter away at the line.

Deirdre Johnston, wife of the winning trainer, said: "He's absolutely enormous but he's so genuine.

"He's won a few over a mile but it looks like stepping him up in trip as brought about some improvement

"If he emulates last year's winner (Fire Fighting) we'll be delighted."

Paddy Mathers had his first winner since October on Castlerea Tess (25-1) in the Congratulations Golden Ticket Winner Elizabeth Garstang Selling Stakes.

The jockey only returned to action in April, but said: "All the signs are that I have a labral tear in my hip.

"The cartilage has come away from the bone so it is bone on bone and I can only bend my knee 30 per cent.

"I went through a lot to get my licence back but if this gets diagnosed properly it will need operating on."

Bryan Smart has a potentially useful filly on his hands in the shape of Whiteandgold, who made just about all of the running in the racinguk.com Novice Auction Stakes.

The Major Cadeaux filly showed the benefit of two previous outings and the 11-10 favourite was not hard-pressed in winning by a length and three-quarters under Paul Mulrennan.

Smart's assistant Kevin Edmunds said: "She's a nice filly and very sweet, and she was unlucky to bump into a smart one (Lomu) last time.

"She's very quick, so we'll have a look and see what is about for her."

Mulrennan said: "She's not seen another filly in the whole race and was pricking her ears.

"She knew more about it this time and could be nice - running in nurseries or maybe even something a bit better."

Former Ralph Beckett inmate Grand Canyon (7-2) made his third start for David O'Meara a winning one in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap.

"He ran a nice race at Ayr last time behind a well-handicapped winner and we hoped he'd come forward from that," said O'Meara.

"It looks like he might get a mile and a half, too."
