KEEP watching the skies. Thousands of spectators are expected when the SkyLive 2016 air show kicks off Durham Tees Valley Airport on Saturday.

The event - the first air show at the former Teesside Airport in 25 years - will feature aircraft of all shapes and sizes from the Battle of Britain to the very latest supersonic fighters.

The Red Arrows aerobatic display team will be putting on a display on Saturday afternoon and the crowds will be entertained by the Blades close formation display team.

Here's ten things to look out for:

  • the Red Arrows: the world's most famous aerobatic display team will be taking to the skies from 3.10pm.

The Northern Echo:

  •  RAF Typhoon: Britain's latest frontline fighter is one of the most capable combat aircraft in the world. Watch as the RAF puts the Typhoon through its paces.

The Northern Echo:

  • Hurricane: Although the Spitfire became emblematic of the Battle of Britain, its less well-known sister aircraft the Hurricane played an equally important role in turning the tide of the air war.
  •  Spitfire: has there ever been a more graceful single-prop fighter aircraft? The Spitfire evolved through several generations and was still flying for the RAF as the jet age dawned.
  •  Silver stars: The parachute display team of the Royal Logistics Corps. Members serve in regular and reserve Army units and carry out parachute displays in their spare time.
  • Battle of Britain Memorial Flight: Celebrate the RAF's World War Two combat airpower with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The Northern Echo:

  • RAF Falcons: Britain's elite parachute force will give a demonstration of their startling freefall skills.
  • Static displays: as well as action in the air there will be plenty to see on the ground. Get up close to the police helicopter, a microlight (a mini-plane made famous in the James Bond movie You Only Live Twice), the Red Arrows, a Hawk training jet and various propeller-driven aircraft. There will also be a flying simulator for visitors who fancy trying their hand at taking the controls.
  •  Fun fair: Keep the kids - young and old - entertained between flying displays by visiting the fun fair. There will be plenty of rides, bouncy castles and stalls.
  •  Motor show: classic cars and commercial vehicles will be on static display for visitors who fancy four-wheel thrills.

How much does it cost? A family ticket (2 adults and 3 kids aged 5-15) costs £35. A standard adult ticket costs £16.50. On-field parking costs £5.

When's it start? Vehicle access to all car parks is from 9.00am.
