A STUDENT nurse is taking on a hospice colour run in memory of her mum.

Kayleigh McIver, from Guisborough, will be doing the St Cuthbert Hospice Colourama run to raise awareness of the work it does.

The 25-year-old is doing it in memory of her mum Sheena McDonald, from Crook, who was looked after by the hospice before her death on August 7 last year.

Though Ms McDonald had wanted to take part in charity events to help others affected by cancer, she was unable to do so before her death.

Instead Miss McIver, her boyfriend Sam Hicks and her brother’s girlfriend Laura Patterson will be doing the 5km fun run in her honour.

She said: “I know my mum would have wanted me to do something like this, not only to raise money for the hospice but to raise awareness of its work and of ovarian cancer.

“My personal experience of St Cuthbert’s was fantastic. The nurses really looked after my mum and made sure she was comfortable. They also made her laugh a lot which was lovely to see.”

The event, at Aykley Heads, is St Cuthbert’s Hospice’s biggest summer fundraiser and sees participants showered in multi-coloured powder paint as they try and negotiate obstacles including a waterslide and cargo nets.

Registration costs £25 for adults and £20 for children aged 15 and under. Children aged five and under can take part for free.
