A CONVICTED rapist who had sex with a schoolgirl is starting an extended prison sentence after being branded a "significant danger" by a judge.

Carl Bishop - a self-confessed Jack the Lad who has slept with hundreds of women and cheated on girlfriends - will spend seven years behind bars.

The 37-year-old Hartlepool man will then spend four years on licence recall to jail, and the rest of his life on the sex offenders' register.

Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday (Monday, May 23) how devious Bishop plied the 15-year-old with alcohol before having sex with her at the home of a friend.

In 2005, he was found guilty of the brutal rape of a woman he had met in 42nd Street nightclub in Hartlepool, and was locked up for five years.

During that trial, he was described as a sexual predator with a Jekyll and Hyde personality, who got his fun in life, going out and picking up girls.

He said he could not remember if he had eight or nine children, claimed the woman made up the allegation because she felt used after they had a one-night stand.

His 22-year-old victim said Bishop called himself Carlos and she feared she was going to have her throat slit when refused to have sex with him.

After serving his sentence, Bishop moved to Middlesbrough and stayed out of serious trouble until the events last year.

He denied charges of rape at a trial which ended last month, and was acquitted. He was found guilty of a count of sexual activity with a child.

A co-accused, Peter Collins, 57, of West Garth, Carlton, Stockton, was cleared of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and sexual touching.

Katy Rafter, mitigating, said warehouse worker Bishop still denied knowing his latest victim was underage, but said he was sorry for what he had done.

"He recognises that it was wholly inappropriate to have sexual intercourse [with the girl]," said Miss Rafter. "He regrets the offence."

The barrister said a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning Bishop from forming a friendship with a woman without telling police was "oppressive".

"It is a disproportionate restriction on his right to a private life," she said. "He would be prohibited from having anyone around for a cup of tea."

Judge Tony Briggs told Bishop, now of Greenford Road, Newcastle, that he had planned sex with the girl and there was an element of grooming to it.

The judge added: "It is perfectly clear you do constitute a danger. I am quite satisfied that there is a significant risk of you committing further offences."
