TEAM GB volleyball players helped out at the first ever junior beach volleyball tournament in Whitby over the weekend.

Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf joined children from Scarborough and Whitby, as well as some adults with special needs from Botton Village in North Yorkshire on Saltburn beach on Friday evening (May 20).

They were training for the Whitby Seafoods’ Classic Beach Volleyball Tournament, which took place on Whitby Beach on Saturday.

The national players also appeared at the contest, where they helped introduce more people to the sport and encourage new talent.

The tournament was hosted by the town’s volleyball team, North Riding Eagles.

Local schools including East Whitby, Eskdale and Botton schools, along with Caedmon College, had teams and players taking part in the volleyball festival.

Also competing were teams from Scarborough, York, Bridlington, Hull, Middlesbrough and Harrogate will all be competing.

Anthony Laffan, who coaches North Riding Eagles, said he wanted to engage all abilities in the sport and see more locals playing.
