Police say they will ensure public order is maintained at Northallerton fracking protest

Large crowds are expected to gather again tomorrow in front of County Hall, in Northallerton, as councillors consider a planning application by Third Energy to hydraulically stimulate and test geological formations.

The plans for a site at Kirby Misperton, near Pickering, are being considered by North Yorkshire County Council’s planning committee, which sat on Friday last week.

Superintendent Dave Hannan, head of specialist operations at North Yorkshire Police, said the force had a duty to facilitate lawful protest.

He said: “This involves liaising with all sides of the issue, working with local authority partners to minimise disruption to residents and businesses, and generally keeping everyone safe.

"We fully understand that this is an emotive issue and passions are running high. We respect everyone's right to express their views.

"However, I want to make it clear from the outset that North Yorkshire Police will take appropriate action against those who break the law. We will not tolerate criminal behaviour and we will ensure public order is maintained."
