EXPECTANT mums and new parents in the Yorkshire Dales have been getting training for dealing with serious problems and emergencies with their babies and young children.

Reeth Medical Centre teamed up with the British Red Cross to deliver an "everyday first aid" session specifically designed for helping a small child or a baby.

The training was designed to provide skills and confidence to isolated rural communities, where emergency help is often not immediately available.

A group of parents learnt new skills for everyday first aid such as helping a child who is choking, has a burn or a scald, has drunk something harmful and spotting the signs of meningitis.

After the session they all received a workbook which complemented the session to take home and share with family and friends.

The scheme is part of the wider strategy of the practice to engage with and empower the community to improve self-care and resilience.

The British Red Cross is currently running first aid sessions for groups such as young families, the elderly or carers. Each training course is specifically designed to suit the needs of the group.
